There is so much
jubilation on the streets of Harare and other parts of Zimbabwe over the
resignation of the 93 year old President Robert Mugabe on Tuesday.
Mugabe had held on to power since 1980 after he led a revolution against the ruling White imperialist helping Zimbabwe to gain its Independence.
But over a week ago, the Army took over, placed Mugabe and his wife under House arrest. Mugabe still held on to power, refusing to resign till yesterday when the Parliament was going to embark on an impeachment process. He had also been expunged from his own ruling ZANU-PF party.
The Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced Mugabe’s resignation and suspended the impeachment procedure.
Mugabe’s sudden downfall started when there was uncertainty over who takes over from him. His ZANU-PF elites' favorite to succeed him is Emmerson Mnangagwa, a former security chief, but it appears Mugabe wants the presidency for his 52-year old wife Grace, also known as “Gucci Grace,” so named for her fondness for luxury items.
To achieve that, Mugabe sacked his deputy, and that made the Military to take over and then forced Mugabe to resign.
Mnangagwa, who is known as The Crocodile, may take over as the President.
